Live NHL TV & Broadcast Schedule

The National Hockey League (NHL) is the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, comprising 32 franchises across the United States and Canada. Running from October through June, the league is globally celebrated for its exceptional speed, physical intensity, and elite skill level. The ultimate objective each season is to capture the Stanley Cup, the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America and the most revered championship in the sport.

Top Teams

The league features a compelling mix of historic "Original Six" franchises and modern expansion success stories. Traditional powerhouses like the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs command massive fanbases and deep historical legacies. In recent years, the competitive landscape has been defined by formidable contenders such as the Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers, and the Florida Panthers. A strict salary cap ensures remarkable parity, allowing well-managed franchises to build championship-caliber rosters and consistently challenge the established hierarchy.

Competition Format

The regular season consists of an 82-game schedule, with teams divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences, each containing two divisions. Operating under a closed franchise system with no promotion or relegation, teams earn two points for a win and one point for an overtime or shootout loss. The top 16 teams advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a grueling, four-round, best-of-seven elimination tournament that tests roster depth and endurance, culminating in the Stanley Cup Final in June.

Broadcasting & Viewership

Domestic broadcasting is driven by massive, multi-year national media agreements. In the United States, rights are shared by The Walt Disney Company (ESPN, ABC, and ESPN+) and Warner Bros. Discovery (TNT, TBS, and Max). In Canada, national coverage is anchored by Sportsnet, CBC (for the iconic Hockey Night in Canada), and TVA Sports for French-language broadcasts. Internationally, the NHL reaches millions through localized streaming partnerships and the NHL Power Play on ESPN+, making marquee outdoor events like the Winter Classic and the spring playoff run a global spectacle.
